CLANNAD the Movie

Aa, gomen, Hopey’s been lazy and busy and whatnot. She’ll probably do a combined late Spring impression post, but she had to do one for the CLANNAD movie after it’s been sitting on her HD since forever and brought her to tears at the end. A good chunk of the movie is a very condensed version of the anime series with notable changes to make it all fit. Or maybe that’s how the story really goes and they just dragged it out in the series. In any case, I liked how the series went more where that’s concerned. Why Kyou and Tomoyo were the only two girls that were featured as close to Tomoya (other than the random Kotomi the Conductor) is beyond me, but I liked how they went a little more into showing how Tomoya got his shoulder hurt and Sunohara going apesh!t on his team that led to him getting kicked off.

Another thing that wasn’t a plus to the movie was how all of a sudden things just popped up and ruined the flow of stuff. Nagisa’s “I’ll tell you why I want to restart the drama club” and Tomoya’s “I love you, Nagisa!” was WTF in the way they lead up to it (or lack thereof), but I must ABSOULTELY commend the way they handled the dream concerning the end of the world. It just flatlined in the series, but in the movie it really meant something and connected everything where Tomoya and Nagisa was concerned. Having them both have the same dream and realizing it was each other they were waiting for was really beautiful. They were essentially having the same dream, but it matched both of their POVs. Tomoya needed someone to save him from his hellhole of a life, and Nagisa needed to save someone and have a purpose. It was brilliant.

What really caught my attention was the final 30 minutes or so of the movie. I’m still unsure of what the much anticipated AFTER STORY is supposed to entail, but if it’s the final minutes of the movie, I can’t wait to see it in a more slow-downed pace. All of a sudden they moved in together and then the next second it’s hinted she died, so it was all up in my face, but once I grasped what was happening it was really moving. I found it really ironic that Tomoya ended up becoming like his father in the fact that he was ignoring his child after the death of his wife, and I hope that he and his dad make up, for even after watching this I’m still not shown of any progress between the two. Perhaps none can really happen, but since they’ve now, unfortunately, been through the same thing, a sense of understanding, at least, can occur.

Mini-Nagisa Ushio is pure WIN. Hopefully now Tomoya won’t run away anymore.

And I don’t like the upbeat Dango song. Give me the slow CLANNAD series ED theme.

kyaaaaaaa !! ^_^ i liked the movie way better than the series because they really went deep into the story of tomoya and nagisa unlike the series where i didn’t really find anything interesting happening; although i have yet to see the after story ^_^ since this was only a movie, i thought it was ok for them not to dive into the story of the other characters, they wouldn’t really have enough time to make a decent presentation of the other characters in a 2 hour movie anyway ^_^ i agree with several things ^_^ i also found the ed of the series way better to fit the mood, i think the upbeat song was made to lighten everything up although to me it ruins the atmosphere more, i also liked how they presented the background of tomoya and sunohara more, and i was also really really touched by the last 30 mins of the show ^_^ (op and ed of the movie is really nice btw ^_^) but i would also like to have a few more things noted here. imo, tomoya’s personality in the movie fits more to the story than the one on the series, nagisa, however, seems wierd and creepy in the movie. The dream was explained more in the movie but i really liked the way they portrayed it in the series, it was very symbolic and mysterious and it fit the story and the mood well. They ended the movie with a happy ending although the story is supposed to be very, even more, depressing which i think will be presented in the series after story. ^_^ and last but not the least, the thing lacking the most in the movie is my little fuko-chan !! ^_^ she should have made an appearance even for a split second ^_^ fuko = little ayu FTW !!!!

Mm, it’s true that it’s okay to not go into all the storylines of the other characters, but to at least see the characters is what I mean. Kotomi was shown, but that was pretty much it. Haha, I was surprised there was no Fuko sighting.

I liked Tomoya’s personality in both the movie and the series, but I agree that Nagisa was a bit weird in the movie.

The way the dream was presented in the series was wonderful, but at the end it didn’t end up being explained, when in the movie it had a real meaning. That was what bothered me about it in the series.

Even with the After Story, I think it’ll end optomistically. That, or they’ll just end it before it gets better. The movie ended happily, but there were rough patches getting there.
