The Tower of Druaga ~the Aegis of URUK~ - Episode 1

I haven’t laughed that hard since the first episode of Hayate no Gotoku!…which could be a bad thing, since Hayate’s jokes got old real fast for me. I still can’t believe that show is still going. Anyway, I dropped Hayate around thirteen episodes in, which is how long this series is supposed to last, so maybe I can tough it out. I mean, that whole ’I want to get married after this’ joke got old around the third time they said it, but putting ‘I want to get remarried’ the very last time sorta mixed things up a little (that and the Star Wars thing right before it was awesome). I might not have to bear with it since the majority of it all was a dream and the real, and hopefully more serious stuff, comes next episode.

I was kind of expecting it all to be a dream, since the OP animation gave off the illusion that it’s just a bunch of regular kids playing a game (like the .hack series). So far, that much hasn’t been proven true, but it’s an okay premise, and I like the fact that the main character hasn’t a clue what he’s doing and is utterly useless. What I also liked about the OP animation is that they blended the credits into the background of everything, instead of just overlaying it on top as usual, which I thought was creative and interesting. As for the actual theme and background music, it didn’t really leave much of an impression, which could be both good and bad since I have nothing bad to say about it, but at the same time it’s nothing memorable.

I’d definitely recommend the first episode at least to all those who love RPGs (I think I even saw a Zelda reference in there), for you’ll die laughing as I was. Even if you’re not a fan of RPGs or video games in general, I’m sure the jokes are still understandable and funny. I’ve yet to be horribly let down by GONZO, but maybe my tolerance is abnormally high. I thnk opening with a parody will draw people in, and with this being 13 episodes, I believe they’ll have time to set up something small, for I was honestly worrying pre-season how they could drag something on like this for so long. I’ll be checking out the second episode to see how the real storyline fairs.

Haha, I can’t name all the jokes I laughed at. I think the first one I laughed at was where he was saying he doesn’t want to fight, but if the other guy wants to he’ll have to defeat him first. That was like WTF, that’s the same thing xD It was great.

With a main character like that, there has to be some comic relief admist the seriousness.
