Dragonaut -The Resonance- - Episode 25 (Series END)

So…it’s done. I’m not sure whether to be happy or not. For the majority of its series run, I really enjoyed Dragonaut a lot– it always left me highly anticpating the next episode. And then Kazuki happened. I like my fair share of happy endings where rival best friends are concerned, for Kira and Athrun ended up fine, but I think it would have been better of Kazuki remained the antagonist. That, or give him a better reason for being a bastard then putting a Kazuki x Jin spin on it. The writer’s at GONZO wanted a happy ending to Dragonaut, though, and other than the death of Nozaki (which I admit, I cried. Lame, ne?) and Ostrum, the ending was ridiculously happy.

I think I laughed the hardest when Jin and Toa were all shiny and they put the smack down on Thanatos. I swear it reminded me of a Sailor Moon attack, and that was just ridiculous because no final attack in a series like this should be like that. Then there was the awkward part of Gio VS Ostrum where they fought doing handstands for a while. I don’t know what was up with that, but Gio going Gundam SEED Akatsuki all golden dragon on us was kinda cool. And we can’t forget about Kazuki FAILing at life. I mean, if he knew his prescious Jin was heading for the head of Thantos, he would have freaked out that he could’ve killed his lover friend. And trying to make Kazuki heterosexual by bringing back Widow as his girlfriend was jokes. When Jin was teasing him, I thought it was like, “Don’t joke around, Jin! I’m only going out with Widow to cover the obsessive love I have for you.”

I think they were trying to have a serious moment where we were supposed to think and reflect about how us humans are very imperfect yet that’s what makes us unique and life worth living or some crap like that, for they were pushing whether Resonance with humans was tainting them or not for a few episodes now, but the whole Kazuki thing just overshadowed it. In hindsight, I suppose it was supposed to help, for Kazuki “changed for the better” and that’s supposed to show the redeeming qualities of mankind or something. The whole “if I’d still love Toa” spin Garnet was trying to do could’ve been cool, but they really rushed it. It would have had more effect if Jin considered giving up his love of Toa to have his family back again, or decide to stay with Toa even if his family would have to die again, instead of having both and realizing it was fake because his family was still alive.

What really bothered me was that Gio ended up leaving with Thanatos, which I suppose is a given because he’s the freaking successor. It kinda feels like the whole “We’re not alone” message they’re trying to send it fake because Gio’s freaking ‘alone’. Why the heck didn’t Jin and Toa go with him? I wanted the three to either die together or stay alive together. But the world’s safe, Thanatos was easily swayed and Machina and Akira seemed happy with the end.

Is it a typical GONZO end? I always thought GONZO projects were okay, even with the infamous popularity they have. They did bring us the original Full Metal Panic! before KyoAni took over the suceeding sequels. Dragonaut started off great but flatlined with the flopping of Kazuki’s story, deeming it a mere okay series. I’d reccommend it solely for giggles, but stop before Kazuki ruins it around Episode 23 or so.
